Welcome from Dr. Jamila K. Stockman
Welcome to the Division of Global Public Health (GPH). As the Chief of the Division of Global Public Health in the Department of Medicine, it is my goal to increase awareness and prevent diseases of global health importance through research and training programs based at UCSD and internationally.
GPH faculty members are renowned for their expertise in prevention research related to infectious diseases, and barriers to care among marginalized populations that typically fall outside the reach of traditional health care systems. Our work often takes us to neighboring Tijuana, where we are engaged in federally funded research on substance use, HIV, TB and related infections. Through these programs, our students and international scholars are trained to respond to these and other emerging health threats, such as the recent outbreak of H1N1 influenza.
Our research focuses on cutting-edge investigations of infectious diseases; rigorous, hands-on behavioral and clinical research training in international settings and diverse communities; providing healthcare, intervention and education to study participants; and offering consultation to international organizations on global health topics.
Together with our international collaborators in developing countries, it is my hope that our work will continue to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, build stronger health care systems, and prepare the next generation of global healthcare leaders for the inevitable challenges they will face.
