Resilience in Indian Girls
Long-term Evaluation of the effects of School-based Resiliency Programming on Social and Emotional Development, Gender Equity and Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescent Girls in Rural Bihar, India- Phase 1
This planning grant will set the stage for a 5-year research initiative to conduct a rigorous, longitudinal evaluation of the efficacy of a school-based social and emotional resiliency program delivered to girls attending 7th and 8th standards (ages 13-14 years) in public school in rural districts of Bihar, India. This longitudinal study aims to determine both the program-related and broader educational, social and economic factors predicting positive development of adolescent girls into young adulthood, including retention in school, delayed age at marriage and first childbirth, positive mental health, and reduced vulnerability to gender inequities.
The Packard Foundation has supported Corstone, a US-based nonprofit, to implement Youth First, a school-based program to foster emotional resilience among boys and girls attending 6th, 7th, and 8th standard in 120 schools across Patna, Darbhanga, and Nalanda districts. No rigorous evaluation to date has assessed the effects of the revised program, or whether and how the observed short-term effects of Youth First persist and effect longer-term social and emotional development. The findings of this present study not only aim to understand the longer-term effects of resiliency programming for adolescent girls, but also aim to be an important contribution to the limited body of longitudinal evaluation research on SRH interventions regarding effects on education completion, child marriage, family planning and early childbirth, and other forms of gender inequity.
