Mitcheal A. Metzner is a Health Counselor for the Division of Global Public Health in the Department of Medicine at UCSD. He is an ABD doctoral candidate at Capella University, School of Public Service Leadership. Mitch is an alum of Harvard University where he completed summer programs in Health and Human Rights, School of Public Health, and Senior Executives in State and Local Government, Kennedy School of Government. Mitch is a graduate of National-Louis University where he completed his Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Management and Business. Prior to UCSD, Mitch was a member of the initial H5N1 CDC/HRSA Pandemic Influenza Antiviral Drug Distribution and Dispensing Work Group for the California Department of Health and Human Services, and a General Manager for Crypto Technology Corporation, an adult industry manufacturing and sales business.

Mitch began working in the field of HIV in 1983 with a number of grass-roots community service organizations while with Sutter General Hospital of Sacramento, California. In the early years of the HIV epidemic he helped found the Office of HIV/AIDS Education for the American Red Cross National Headquarters where he authored and produced a series of public health education brochures and guides in several languages for emergency and public safety workers, teachers and school officials, workers in health care settings, and several segments of the general public. Mitch also authored and produced instructor/trainer training materials; educational videos, including Managing Disabilities in the Workplace; and the Workplace HIV/AIDS Program for the American Red Cross and the CDC Business and Labor Resource Service. His work with the American Red Cross included contributing to Understanding AIDS by Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, the Americans with Disabilities Act of the first Bush administration, and the Memorandum on AIDS by President Clinton.

Currently a Human Sexuality lecturer at San Diego City College, Mitch has been a CEU lecturer on HIV at San Marcos State University, and was an Adjunct Professor of Disaster Mental Health for Carlos Albizu University of Puerto Rico. Mitch has been a consultant and trainer for the White House, US Department of Commerce, Nippon Shin-Yaku Labor Union, Russian Ministry of Health, Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce, and the Swedish Public School system, as well as a number of businesses and corporations including Kaiser Permanente, FedEx and Home Depot. His work in public health education and research has addressed HIV, TB, Pandemic Influenza, HCV, and methamphetamine use among men who have sex with men.
